Description of the problem

If somewhere should resolve and prevent the existence of mold, fungi, bacteria, microorganisms are in the open surfaces of walls, ceilings and other elements, hospitals, health care facilities, clinics, operating rooms, etc. Undoubtedly acquired infections related to healthcare (nosocomial infections) are a serious public health problem worldwide, and we all know someone who entered a hospital with a problem, but unfortunately acquired another, usually a new infection, while he was operated on or was treated for another ailment. Although there are extensive prevention protocols, a holistic system that adds barriers is necessary. Fakolith with its range of hygienic paints with BioFilmStop technology to inhibit biofilm and pathogenic bacteria provides a hygienic solution for areas affected by humidity, mold and microorganisms, and prevention for dry areas apparently in good condition. This range includes paints suitable for each hospital area, with proven resistance to cleaning and disinfection, and with antibacterial treatment BioFilmStop (BPR Art3) effective against even MRSA bacteria (resistant to antibiotics) among other secondary functions. While the priority is the solution of areas affected by humidity and mold with our paints, we must not forget that prevention is the best weapon against the causative agents of nosocomial infections. Summary of the most common basic solution and procedure

1. SURFACE DISINFECTION AND CLEANING


· BIOFILMSTOP Cleaner: Application of the disinfectant and concentrated surface cleaner with HA Register, for the elimination of biofilm, bacteria, fungi, virus, damage caused by moisture., etc.,  and subsequent rinsing with water, to leave the base ready for the next treatment.


2. SURFACE PRIMER


· DISPERLITH PRIMER: Application of the fixing nano primer with high resistance to humidity, to consolidate the base and prevent the infection from regenerating from the inside. The base will be prepared for the adequate adhesion of the most suitable sanitary paint for each case.    


3. PAINTING OF THE SURFACE: Final painting with 2 coats with the intelligent paint with BioFilmStop sanitary and hygienic technology, suitable for use in hospitals and health sectors, with high resistance to humidity, cleaning and disinfection, molds, biofilm, bacteria, yeast...  


· Option A - DISPERLITH HYGIENIC: Our ecological paint with Ecolabel Seal, is the most usual for painting or repainting walls and ceilings surfaces that are not affected by humidity.   


· Option B - DISPERLITH ELASTIC: the most common for painting or repainting on surfaces where is required a higher incidence of cleaning and disinfection, in already affected areas, or where a waterproofing paint and /or CE marking tests and antimicrobial certification and desinfection for Clean Rooms are required. (Alternatively, can be used Disperlith FoodGrade Elastic).


· Option C - FAKOLITH FK-45 FG Hygienic : Especially in baseboards, floors, high performance surfaces, interiors of water tanks and pipes, the use of the ultrahigh solids epoxy version with CE marking tests, is may be the best option. (Alternatively, also, other foodgrade version: FK-45 FoodGrade).

Application process

1.- BIOFILMSTOP Cleaner

IMPORTANT: BIOFILMSTOP CLEANER, has demonstrated efficacy according to EN 14476 against Adenovirus, Poliovirus and Murine Norovirus. All three are unwrapped viruses that are very difficult to inactivate by chemical disinfectants. Above all Poliovirus which is a very lipophilic virus and against which the quaternary ammoniums, on their own, are often not effective. Having passed this standard, it can be stated that BIOFILMSTOP Cleaner is totally virucidal according to the EN 14476 standard. THIS INCLUDES THE CORONAVIRUS which is a wrapped virus.


DESCRIPTION AND MAIN USE: BIOFILMSTOP CLEANER by Fakolith, is a contact disinfectant with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Concentrated, water-based, BioFilmStop Cleaner acts effectively as a bactericide, fungicide and virucide. Disinfectant with Health Registration 18-20/40/90-09472 and 18-20/40/90-09472-HA , listed on the Ministry of Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Welfare website, in the register of non-agricultural biocides or pesticides. Fakolith as a manufacturer is registered in the Register of establishments and pesticide service: ROESP E-0043-E. DRP 16-0038748. Authorised use for groups PT2 and PT4 as a surface and area disinfectant, environmental use, in the food industry, hospitals (not to be confused with PT2 disinfectants specific for medical areas), industries and public areas, clinics, schools, public and institutional areas, homes, offices and buildings. It works by destroying the cell membrane of bacteria, moulds and yeasts, generating a deep disinfection. Depending on the degree of dilution that is made, we can increase the power from disinfectant to cleaning disinfectant, being recommended for a maximum regular disinfection to work between 2.5-5% of the product in water. Higher concentrations will have a positive effect when a cleaning effect is also desired.

Contact and environmental disinfection: Surfaces and equipment by immersion or manual washing with brushes, mops, or spraying/misting, always with the product diluted in water:

RECOMMENDED AVERAGE DISSOLUTION:

-To ensure a bactericidal activity, apply the product to the surface at a maximum dissolution of 1:65 in water (concentration 1.5%), and leave it to act for at least 5-10 minutes.

-To ensure a fungicidal activity apply the product on the surface at the maximum dissolution of 1:32 in water (concentration 3%), and leave it to act for at least 15-20 minutes.

As a precaution against coronavirus and to ensure a viricidal function in all cases, apply the product on the surface at the maximum dissolution of 1:19 in water (5% concentration), and leave it to act for at least 15-20 minutes. (A concentration of 2%, i.e. 1:49 in water is effective in many cases as indicated in the efficacy tests below, but to avoid human failure, in critical situations, we recommend using 5%).

-To ensure a bactericidal, fungicidal, virucidal and deep cleaning action, apply the product 1 to 2 times on the surface at a maximum dissolution of 1:7 in water (concentration 12.5%), and leave it to act for at least 15-20 minutes. A higher concentration can accelerate the process.

WAY OF APPLICATION: Always protect yourself properly with the personal protection equipment indicated in the safety data sheet. Protect well all the surfaces that should not be treated or splashed. Contact disinfection: Surfaces and equipment by spraying or fogging, immersion or manual washing with the product diluted in water. A pre-treatment test is recommended to verify the compatibility of the product with the materials on which it is applied. Once the mixture has been made, apply it preferably from the upper area with a brush, sponge, mop or spray, depending on the nature of the base. Contribute to the removal of dirt and grease or food residues by brushing. After the application, brush and always respecting the contact times, rinse the surfaces with water. In cases where only a bactericidal action is sought, and the surfaces are not going to be in contact with food, it is possible to let them dry in the air without rinsing with water. BIOFILMSTOP CLEANER contains additional special tensoactives in its formulation that give it detergent and cleaning properties, allowing the product to be applied as a cleaner (in high concentration) and disinfectant in a single treatment. In some cases it may be advisable to clean with FK-12, FK-111 or FK-112, depending on the type of dirt and surface. P

2.- DISPERLITH Primer

PROPERTIES: DISPERLITH PRIMER is a special water-based, low VOC, transpirable primer, based on hybrid nano-resins, with quartz nanospheres, that provides excellent penetrability, adherence, permeability to water vapour and resistance to surface alkalinity.

BIOFILMSTOP SANITARY TECHNOLOGY (Treated Article BPR Art.3): DISPERLITH Primer is an intelligent sanitary primer, treated with BioFilmStop inhibition technology highly resistant to biofilm bacteria and mould, DIN-UNE EN 15457:2008 (Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Penicillium, Algae…), as well as bacteria, ISO 22196:2011 (Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus subtillis, Pseudonomas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enteritidis, Legionella pneumophila...). The products in the Disperlith range positively contribute to compliance with (EC) 852/2004, are manufactured subject to HACCP and GMP (EC) 2023/2006, also notably improving HACCP, food safety and asepsis for the user company. Declaration of Conformity – Health Register FAKOLITH RGSEAA ES-39.005259/T and ROESP E-0043-E.

RECOMMENDED USE: DISPERLITH Primer is particularly recommended as a general primer for the DISPERLITH range of paints, as it allows the paint to be applied with good adhesion and regulated absorption to mineral surfaces, either new or previously painted, to plaster and plasterboard type surfaces, and also as a bridge between silicate, silicon, sol-silicate or dispersion, on walls, ceilings and surfaces in general, both interior and exterior.

HOW TO APPLY: Carefully protect all surfaces that are not to be treated from splashing. Application can take place at ambient and surface temperatures of 5ºC or over. Generally, apply an abundant coat of DISPERLITH Primer using brush, roller or airless spray gun, onto surfaces that are clean and as dry as possible, and then let them dry before going ahead with the subsequent painting. AVERAGE YIELD: DISPERLITH PRIMER provides a yield of approx. 4-10 m2/l, although this may vary considerably depending on how it is applied, and the texture and absorption of the surface it is applied to.

3.- Option A - DISPERLITH HYGIENIC

PROPERTIES: DISPERLITH Hygienic is the first ecological paint to be awarded European Union Ecolabel Certification, Reg. No. ES-CAT/044/001, in accordance with the new, and demanding, Ecolabel criteria, regarding water-based dispersion paints formulated with vinyl acetate and ethylene modified copolymers, low emissions and low odour (zero-zero Voc), free of APEO, ammonium, formaldehyde and heavy metals, for interior use. DISPERLITH Hygienic forms a well-balanced film of paint that is easy to apply, quick drying, with low odour that provides an excellent finish, in line with the DIN EN 13300 Standard, wet scrub resistance Class 2 (>260 ml/m²), covering Class 1, with a high level of water vapour transpiration, Class 1 (SD = 0.03), and water permeability, Class 1 (W = 0.9). Paint resistant to the most disinfectant cleaners according to Tests DIN EN ISO 4628-2: 2004-01 by TÜV SÜD Germany and/or Fakolith R&D+i (For more security, before use, ask your case to our Tech. Department)
Good adhesion, particularly on mineral or painted surfaces. It could be applied at temperatures of 5ºC or over, up to a maximum relative humidity of 75%. Available in white and other colours.

RECOMMENDED USE: DISPERLITH Hygienic is recommended as an interior finish paint for domestic interiors, particularly for walls and ceilings, both dry and in conventional damp or humid environments, such as bathrooms and kitchens, whether new or in the process of renovation and restoration, can be used on practically any kind of dry, cured and consistent surface (plasterboard, plaster, previously painted surfaces, texturglas, etc.). For construction and civil engineering works, and communal areas in the food industry, health sector, public sector, or the pharmaceuticals and cosmetics industry in general.

HOW TO APPLY: Carefully protect all surfaces that are not to be treated from splashing. Application can take place at ambient and surface temperatures as low as 5ºC. DISPERLITH Hygienic should be applied undiluted in two coats using brushes, rollers or airless spray guns. The surface must be clean, free of hygroscopic salts, microorganisms, etc. and, should such be required, must be duly primed. Do not apply the second until the first coat has lost its wet sheen and is dry to the touch (in normal conditions, of around 20ºC with a humidity of around 60%, this will be in approx. 2-3 hours). 3.- Option B - DISPERLITH ELASTIC

PROPERTIES: DISPERLITH Elastic special water-based dispersion paint, formulated with modified acrylates copolymers, low emissions and low odour (Low Voc), free of APEO, ammonium, formaldehyde and heavy metals, highly resistant to dampness and humidity, for interior and exterior use. DISPERLITH Elastic forms a well-balanced and elastic film of paint, with a satin finish, that is easy to clean and disinfect, easy to apply and, quick drying, also at low temperatures, from 3ºC, with low odour and providing an excellent finish, in line with the DIN EN 13300 Standard, wet scrub resistance Class 1, covering Class 1 (>250 ml/m²), highly impermeable to water vapour, Class 3 (SD = 1.57), and water permeability Class 1 (W = 0.03). It could be applied at temperatures of 3ºC or over and up to a maximum relative humidity of 75%. DISPERLITH Elastic is a paint with (EC) UNE-EN 1504-2:2005 marking and that is highly resistant to Class 1 and 2 aggressive chemical attack, with testing of the food simulants, along with the usual cleaning and disinfecting agents in their maximum recommended solutions, TECNALIA Report 050844 and Tests DIN EN ISO 4628-2: 2004-01 by TÜV SÜD Germany and/or Fakolith R&D+i (For more security, before use, ask your case to our Tech. Department). Available in white and other colours.

BIOFILMSTOP SANITARY TECHNOLOGY (Treated Article BPR Art.3): DISPERLITH Elastic is an intelligent sanitary paint, treated with BioFilmStop Inhibition, highly resistant to biofilm bacteria and mould, DIN-UNE EN 15457:2008 (Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Penicillium, Algae…), as well as bacteria, ISO 22196:2011 (Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus subtillis, Pseudonomas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enteritidis, Legionella pneumophila...). RECOMMENDED USE: DISPERLITH Elastic is designed for interior and exterior use, and is compatible with most surfaces, duly primed should, such be required, and to cover well-adhered previous coats of dispersion or priming paints, resistant to cross-cut test Class 0-1 UNE-DIN EN ISO 2409:2007. Its excellent covering and water-vapour barrier qualities mean that it functions as an excellent waterproofing film, particularly in severe industrial, climate or sanitary conditions, for the food industry, health sector, and pharmaceutical or cosmetics industry in general, construction and civil engineering (for contact with foods in open areas use the version DISPERLITH Foodgrade Elastic).

Application can take place at ambient and surface temperatures as low as 2-3ºC and up to a maximum relative humidity of 75%. Following adequate preparation of the surface DISPERLITH Elastic should be applied undiluted, in two coats, using brushes, rollers or airless spray guns. The surface must be clean, free of hygroscopic salts, microorganisms, etc. and, should such be required, duly primed. Do not apply the second until the first coat has lost its wet sheen and is dry to the touch (in normal conditions, of around 20ºC with a humidity of around 60%, this will be in approx. 2-3 hours). 3.- Option C - FK-45 FoodGrade Hygienic

DESCRIPTION: FAKOLITH FK-45 Foodgrade Hygienic is a heavy duty two-component modified epoxy FoodGrade paint with a high solids content, low voc, low odour and CE marking, with a higher level of physicochemical resistance and performance than FK-45 FoodGrade. FK-45 FoodGrade Hygienic is a FoodGrade epoxy paint that ensures limitation of toxic migrations, generates a high-gloss impermeable film that is easy to clean and disinfect, with water at temperatures of up to 90ºC. The excellent covering and vapour barrier effect qualities of this paint ensure that it will function as an excellent waterproofing agent and long term anticorrosion treatment, when applied to metals in combination with a correct anticorrosion primer system. Compatible with most duly primed mineral and metallic surfaces, lacquer-finish sandwich panels and previous, well adhered coats of compatible paints and/or primers, resistant to cross-cut test Class 0-1 UNE-DIN EN ISO 2409:2007. FK-45 FoodGrade Hygienic is highly resistant to abrasion UNE EN ISO 5470-1:1999 and extremely resistant to aggressive chemical attacks UNE EN 1504-2:2005 (chemicals compatible for epoxy), with a UNE Shore hardness of 80±5 units, Shore D EN ISO 868:2003 (23±2ºC; 50±5%Hr), covering Class 1 (300 µm dry film) and damp rubbing Class 1, DIN EN 13300. Paint resistant to the most disinfectant cleaners according to Tests DIN EN ISO 4628-2: 2004-01 by TÜV SÜD Germany and/or Fakolith R&D+i (For more security, before use, ask your case to our Tech. Department).

FOOD GRADE PAINT CERTIFIED FOR DIRECT CONTACT: FK-45 FoodGrade Hygienic epoxy paint duly complies with all current European regulations regarding materials that come into contact with foods, (EC) Regulation 852/2004, (EC) Regulation 1935/2004, HACCP, Regulation 1895/2005 (use as heavy duty coating), and (EC) GMP Regulation 2023/2006, as well as Spanish RD 847/2011 and (EU) Commission Regulation No. 10/2011, along with last amendment EU 2018/213 regarding plastic objects and materials designed to come into contact with foods. To this end FK-45 FoodGrade Hygienic has been tested with simulants A, B, C (OM2-40ºC) and D2 (OM2, 20ºC), as shown in the trials run by Fakolith, through independent certificating entities such as Tecnalia and the CNTA (Spanish National Food Technology Centre), among others, insofar as there is compliance in all of the tested cases with the overall and specific migration limits imposed by the Regulation for the above-mentioned simulants, which are equivalent to all of the simulants and, as a result are apt for direct contact with all foods and drinks (with the exception of vinegar, which damages epoxy resin). FK-45 FoodGrade Hygienic has Compliance Declaration – Sanitary Registration FAKOLITH RGSEAA ES-39.005259/T. Available in the most standard industrial colours for the food industry and the health sector.

BPA-FREE TECHNOLOGY: As an added value, FK-45 Foodgrade Hygienic has been developed with BPA-free technology resins, and is also free of Bisphenol A.

BIOFILMSTOP SANITARY TECHNOLOGY (Treated Article BPR Art.3): FK-45 Foodgrade Hygienic is a FoodGrade paint that reconciles FoodGrade Technology and Sanitary BioFilmStop Inhibition Technology, highly resistant to biofilm bacteria and mould, ISO 22196:2011 (Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus subtillis, Pseudonomas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enteritidis, Legionella pneumophila...) and, moreover, notably improving HACCP, food safety and asepsis for the user company, while combining Fakolith’s innovative FOODTECH film protection technology, based on food preservatives.

RECOMMENDED USE: FK-45 FoodGrade Hygienic epoxy paint is specifically formulated for the protection and finishing of surfaces that come into direct or indirect contact with nearly all manner of foods and drinks, in line with current European regulations, and is for application to the insides of food tanks and silos >10.000 l., food transport elements, skirting boards, floors, walls, ceilings, objects, machinery, installations, structures, etc. located in interiors. Generally, for use in the food industry, the health sector, the pharmaceuticals and cosmetics industry, construction and civil engineering.

HOW TO APPLY: Following adequate preparation of the surface and having confirmed the suitability of the environment, FK-45 FoodGrade Hygienic paint can be applied by brush or roller, or for finishes and optimum applications use AirMix or Airless with heated Hose. Slowly pour component A into component B (never the other way round), mix together gently using an electric mixer, for at least 2 minutes or until the components have blended completely together, and then leave to rest for 1 minute before starting to apply. When mixing always use complete batches of component A and component B, to avoid errors in the mixing ratio. Plan carefully its application, bearing in mind its short pot-life of the mix. It can be applied over fibreglass netting systems, in tanks and on floors, mixed with non-slip quartz sand. Should it be necessary adjust the viscosity of the paint by thinning with 5-10% of special FoodGrade solvent, FK-45 Solvent OEM FG.

ATTENTION TO THE CONDITIONS OF APPLICATION AND CURING: Drying time and the waiting time for the second coat depend on layer thickness, temperature, relative humidity and ventilation. The environment and base temperature should never be lower than + 10ºC and higher than 35ºC, and the relative humidity should not be higher than 70-75%. The surface temperature of the base to be painted should always be at least 3 ° C above the dew point to avoid condensation. It is estimated that the ideal application temperature is around 20ºC and 60% relative humidity. In the event that environmental conditions are not appropriate for its application and curing, these should be adapted with extraction and ventilation of air, either at room temperature, with cold or heat, with dehumidifiers, etc., until the environmental conditions are adequate and stable during the application and curing, and always avoiding the generation of moisture condensation, since this would prevent the proper curing of the paint, especially made to monitor in tanks and confined spaces. Epoxy paint should not be in contact with water or surface condensation during the first 72 hours of curing, or the paint may not cure properly, appearing "Amine Blush" wash spots.

DEPOSITS OF FOOD LIQUIDS >10.000 l.: In general, the film will present its complete curing, from 7 to 14 days for contact with food and drinks (cured at 23ºC, 50% relative humidity, layer> 300 microns dry). At a lower temperature and / or higher humidity and layer, the curing time can be significantly increased. On the other hand, if the temperature conditions are higher, the humidity is lower and / or there is less coating, the curing time can be significantly reduced. It is necessary to maintain suitable environmental conditions during application and curing, for which it is necessary to use ventilation systems with air extraction and hot air, preferably dehydrated, avoiding condensation, to maximize the curing conditions. Before filling a tank that has been coated with FK-45 FoodGrade paints range, the complete curing of the film should be checked, as well as at least an initial cleaning on the entire surface, with clear water, or preferably with neutral soap and later rinse. For tanks <10.000 l. use the paint FK-45 FoodGrade.

OTHER GENERAL APPLICATIONS: the painting offers good general resistance, at least after 72 hours of curing, although we recommend not exposing the paint film to severe chemical-physical aggressions until it has been cured for at least 1 week (walls, floors, ceilings, indirect contact).

FORCED DRYING: in general, applications with forced drying with hot air dehydrated can greatly reduce the drying, curing and commissioning time. An example of this can be the application in interior of pipes, where specialist companies after the application with systems and special equipment, artificially circulate a current of hot dehydrated air, and after checking the correct curing, make a later washing with water, before of the definitive commissioning. The contribution of heat at a higher temperature shortens the programming of the curing cycle. For more details, consult technical data sheet and / or application guides, and safety data sheet.

AVERAGE YIELD: according to recommended coat thickness, depending on use of FK-45 FoodGrade Hygienic

- Dry thickness 200 µm = wet 285 gr/m² (211 ml/m²) - yield 3,51 m²/kg (4,74 m²/L).
- Dry thickness 300 µm = wet 427 gr/m² (316 ml/m²)- yield of 2,34 m²/kg (3,16 m²/L).
- Dry thickness 350 µm = wet 497 gr/m² (368 ml/m²)- yield of 2,01 m²/kg (2,70 m²/L).
- Dry thickness 400 µm = wet 568 gr/m² (421ml/m²)- yield of 1,76 m²/kg (2,38 m²/L).
- Dry thickness 500 µm = wet 710 gr/m² (526 ml/m²)- yield of 1,41 m²/kg (1,90 m²/L).
- Dry thickness 700 µm = wet 995 gr/m² (737 ml/m²)- yield of 1,00 m²/kg (1,36 m²/L).
